Artist Statement
In addition to being a full service sign shop, Nomad Neon functions as Kaelyn’s art studio where she creates her body of work.
My body of work utilizes painting, neon lighting, found objects and glass to create multimedia illuminated artworks that spark curiosity.
I have a fascination with the human relationship to light, and the consequential effect it has on our minds and our day to day lives. Our evolutionary history taught us to be guided by light; the sun tells us of a new day, the glow of a fire on a hillside lets us know of danger. In my experience in working with neon, viewers are much like moths to a flame due to this reaction to light. There is a sense of magic and discovery in being introduced to neon tubes, in watching the gases dance within the glass walls. In sharing this experience with others, I have found a fulfilling purpose in life and see neon as an essential element in the art work I create.
I see light art as a variation of interactive art. The way light is perceived aesthetically depends on the objects around it; and the artwork itself is a result of the interactivity between light and its surroundings. I create artwork that plays with these ideas, and to experiment with this concept I use a variety of materials in my work.
I grew up in the Nevada desert and am continually inspired by its landscape and wildlife. Nevada is a place filled with neon, remains of the wild west, and an abundance of seemingly untouched beauty in a place brimming with life. I often explore themes of how life is fleeting, change, and the quickly passing nature of time into my work. I feel as though it is a lifelong pursuit to accept that everything changes, and nothing lasts forever. The natural world in my view mimics that idea to us and by using those themes in my work I attempt to follow that pursuit.
I am currently focusing on growing the neon community in Colorado, collaborating with other artists, offering neon education opportunities, and creating my own body of work.
